Ancient History of the City
Byblos (bib-los) is the ancient Phoenician name of the current city of Jbeil (in Arabic جبيل). It is located on the Mediterranean coast between Beirut and Tripoli in Lebanon. As early as the Chalcolithic period of the 4th millennium B.C., fishermen and farmers cultivated olive trees and cereals and bred livestock.
Byblos is believed by many to be the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world. Byblos is associated with the early development of writing and the beginning of pictographic script in the era as early as the late 4th millennium. The Greeks apparently called it Byblos because it was through Gebal that bublos (βύβλος ["Egyptian papyrus"]) was imported into Greece.
Its location among the European, Asian and African continents made Byblos an important trading hub. The Phoenicians were famous for their crafts and artistic work in metal, ivory, glass, terra cotta, wood and stone in addition to weaving and dyeing purple wool and fabrics. Therefore, the cedar-made ships carried these goods to South Europe and West Africa. The Phoenicians not only traded their own products but also brought tin from Spain, copper and ore from Cyprus, and whatever else was available and of some value.
Byblos today is a thriving modern town that still has remains of the Crusader castle, old harbor, church and the old market area, which are visited by tourists every year.
